Since 1993 the Caramoor Jazz Festival has presented hundreds of the finest jazz musicians from superstars to emerging artists, from big bands to solo pianists, in an eclectic mix featuring unique combinations of artists in true Festival style. At twenty, we pose the question “What is the Universal Golden Key for jazz musicians?†It is experiencing and expressing – in the present moment – an urgent, spiritual purpose and freedom, and sharing it with you, the appreciative listener.
During the Jazz Festival, we proudly present musicians that possess that Golden Key: Souza, Marsalis, Carter, Tolliver, Iyer, Loueke, and Makowicz, to name a few. And we revisit the tremendous work of Charles Mingus 50 years ago – in 1963 – when he was in top creative form as composer, musician and bandleader.
Caramoor is the legacy of Walter and Lucie Rosen who built the luxurious Mediterranean-style villa and filled it with their treasures. Walter Rosen was the master planner for the Caramoor estate, bringing his dream of creating a place to entertain friends from around the world to reality. Their musical evenings were the seeds of the Summer Music Festival of today.
With its outstanding performances, engaging arts-in-education programming, the extraordinary Rosen House, and beautiful grounds, Caramoor is a cornerstone of the cultural life of Westchester County and beyond. Since 1945 visitors have delighted in the exceptional music—from classical to opera to jazz—and the enchanting garden setting that makes Caramoor such a unique and treasured resource. Caramoor is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
