Icelandic Horses, Workshops for All Ages, Icelandic Wool Demo, Curator Tour, Icelandic Storyteller Plus an Evening of Icelandic Treats

Sunday, July 27, 12 to 8 pm

WHAT:
A day and evening of Icelandic art, culture and treats at the Katonah Museum of Art. Enjoy food from the grill and gourmet ice cream all day long! Prices vary per program.

Icelandic Horses – Meet Icelandic horses and watch riding demonstrations
12 and 2 pm – demonstrations of gaits unique to Icelandic horses
12:30 pm and 2:30 pm – meet Icelandic horses up close and personal
Icelandic Horses walk, trot and canter just like other horses, but they also move in two gaits unique to the breed. The tölt is an extremely smooth four-beated gait, and the flying pace is a fast two-beat lateral racing gait at which Icelandic horses can move up to 30 miles per hour. Free with museum admission.

Icelandscapes: Terrarium workshops with Wave Hill’s Laurel Rimmer
About 470 species of native plants are found in Iceland, half of which are thought to be glacial survivors from the Ice Age. Large areas of bare rock, sandy wastelands and lava fields define the sub-arctic landscape. Join a terrarium specialist from Wave Hill, New York City’s famed public garden, to create your own Icelandic-themed glass terrarium jars (adults) or make an open dish garden (children).
12:30 pm – 1:30 pm Terrarium Workshop for ages 14 and up, $35 member, $45 non-member. Advance registration recommended to guarantee supplies.
3 – 4 pm Dish Garden Workshop for families, $12 member, $18 non-member.

Icelandic Lopi wool
Join your KMA friends to make wild and wooly creations: watch a needle felting demonstration; make your own mini-sheep using real Icelandic roving.
1 pm: Icelandic Lopi wool demo – all ages, free with Museum admission.
1:30 – 3 pm: Felting hands-on sheep project – Drop-in workshop for all ages. Materials fee: $5 members, $8 non-members.

Story teller Bill Gordh
1 pm and 3 pm – with words and music, professional storyteller Bill Gordh brings Icelandic stories to life. The Icelandic sagas were a source of inspiration to classic authors like J.R.R. Tolkien, and Icelanders treasure the epic sagas of larger-than-life heroes and battles both for their historical record and their narrative artistry. Iceland’s tiny “hidden folk,” on the other hand, are part of Iceland’s daily consciousness, and the stories of these elven creatures are deeply woven into the fabric of Icelandic culture. Free with Museum admission.

Curator’s tour of ICELAND: Artists Respond to Place.
2:30 pm. Free with Museum admission.

Evening of Icelandic treats and beer garden delights
6 – 8 pm – complimentary beer, wine, and tastes of Icelandic foods. Listen to the rootsy, smart sounds of singer-songwriter Milton. From the grill – sliders, hot dogs, and sides available for sale. $15 members, $20 non-members.
