SEPTEMBER WEEKDAY CLASSES FOR YOUNG CHILDREN

NATURE SERIES PROGRAMS FOR YOUNG PEOPLE

(6-week class – 2 sessions available)

Children and parents or caregivers come for an hour of nature fun. Dress for outdoor activity. Except in extreme weather conditions, a portion of each class is spent outdoors. Admittance closes 15 minutes after the start of the program.

PRE-REGISTRATION & PRE-PAYMENT REQUIRED. Tuition per 6-week session—if you join mid-session, rates will be pro-rated. Fees: Members: $50 per child. Non-members: $90 per child.

Wild Encounters Storytime (3-5 years old)

Nature discovery for youngsters, with a parent or caregiver. Enjoy a nature themed story and discover the wonders of nature while exploring fields, forests or landscaped grounds. Let your imagination run wild!

Mother Nature’s Storytime (2-4 years old)

Children, with parent or caregiver, enjoy summer days at the center with nature themed stories, nature walks, live animals, and/or crafts.

WEEKLY SUNDAY WALKS FOR ALL AGES

TEACHING TRAILS: A COMMUNITY PATH FOR ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION

EVERY SUNDAY AT 11:30AM (SEP 14, 21, 28)

(NOTE: No walk September 7)

Join us for a Guided Trail Experience through the woodland forest. Discover who left that track, which tree makes the best animal home, or which mushrooms make the best dinner. Program runs approximately 45 minutes. FREE

SEPTEMBER EVENING PROGRAM FOR ADULTS AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS:

WED, SEPT 10, 7PM REFRESHMENTS / 7:30PM PROGRAM – SIERRA CLUB – BIDDER 70- FILM & DISCUSSION – The story of contemporary American hero Tim DeChristopher, University of Utah student, who bid $1,800,000 in a government auction to save 22,000 pristine acres surrounding Utah’s National Parks. He had no intention to pay or to drill. DeChristopher paid with his future to save the land he loves. Discussion to follow film. Program presented in partnership with the Sierra Club Lower Hudson Group; designed for adults and high school students. FREE and handicapped accessible.

All program fees are per person and include admission to indoor exhibits and Animal Museum. Space is limited; pre-payment and pre-registration are required for some events. Children under 2 are free. Admittance closes 15 minutes after the start of the program.

Get an early start to celebrating National Grandparent’s Day! Bring the whole family and enjoy an informative program that allows you to get up close and hands-on with some of our live animals! This is a program that you don’t want to miss. FREE for members, Non-members $8

HARVEST PARTY

It’s the season to reap the harvest of our organic garden and hives! Our naturalist prepare a sampling of tasty treats from our garden, and you learn about the fascinating social network of honeybees, beekeeping, and how honey is harvested from our hives. Honey is extracted by our beekeeper H. Peet Foster. There is a free tasting of fresh honey-from-the-hives, and the newly harvested honey is available for purchase. Members- $4, Non-Members- $8

HOW EASY CAN IT BE? COMPOSTING FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY

There’s gold in those leaves, grass clippings, weeds and kitchen scraps! Come discover the magic of compost and learn how easy it can be to turn your yard and food waste into valuable fertilizer for your garden. Members-$5, Non-members- $8

BEAR-FOOT STORYTIME

Join a naturalist for storytime, based on our popular Wild Encounters Storytime held weekly on Monday afternoons. This hour long program includes a story, live animals, and a nature-themed activity. Recommended for children ages 2-6. Members-$5, Non-members- $8

2ND ANNUAL GOLF OUTING & RECEPTION

Join us for our 2nd Annual Golf Outing and Reception! Held at the Scarsdale Golf Club, it is a fun day complete with golfing, contests, silent auction, and dinner reception. Not a Golfer? You can come to the dinner reception which includes music and cocktails. See website for more details on volunteer opportunities, sponsorships, silent auction donations, and ticket purchase. Fees: Golf Outing & Reception per person- $400; Reception only per person- $100

A naturalist presents an informative program that allows you to get up close and hands-on with some of the Nature Center’s live animals! What wild fun will you have today? FREE for members, Non-members- $8

WHAT’S THE BUZZ WITH HONEYBEES?

Come learn about the busy life of a honeybee hive with a naturalist. Learn why and how these amazing creatures are critical players in our own lives and the global economy. Also discussed are the current threats faced by honeybees, and how what harms bees, threatens us in turn. The program includes a taste test of local-made honeys. Members- $5, Non-members- $8

WORM BIN

Worms are a great way to compost your food waste indoors all year round. Learn to make your own worm bin by upcycling a disposable Styrofoam cooler. Pre-registration required and closes one week prior to event. See website for more details. Fee per bin: Members-$12, Non-members- $15

LOVE ‘EM & LEAVE ‘EM

Fall leaves are a valuable resource for your property! Learn how to “re-invest” your fall leaves into your soil by shredding them right into your lawn, turning them into an attractive mulch for your garden beds, or using them to generate your own home-compost. If rain, program will be re-scheduled. Members- $5, Non-members- $8

BIRDS OF PREY

Join a naturalist to see live birds of prey. Discover what makes these magnificent creatures the hunters of the sky. Includes a visit to the outdoor bird aviary to see the majestic Bald Eagles. Members- $5, Non-members- $8

STORY WALK

THROUGH SEPTEMBER 28

Join us for our annual story walk. Take a self-guided walk with your child along our woodland trail to enjoy a favorite children’s storybook, entitled Opossum at Sycamore Road by Sally M. Walker. Stop by the Manor House to pick up a California Pizza Kitchen (CPK) bookmark, good for one free CPK kid’s meal, an activity sheet, and to enter a raffle to win a CPK $20 gift certificate. Recommended for children ages 8 and younger. FREE. Sponsored by California Pizza Kitchen.

The Greenburgh Nature Center is a 33-acre woodland preserve with trails, a pond, gardens, a playground, and outdoor animal exhibits, including a birds of prey aviary. Our indoor exhibits include a live animal museum with over 100 specimens, exhibit areas focusing on nature and the environment, a greenhouse with botanical exhibits, and a gift shop. We offer special programs for groups of all ages on a wide range of environmental topics, camps and birthday parties, either here or at your location. We also have a variety of volunteeropportunities for all ages and skill levels.

The mission of the Greenburgh Nature Center is to offer inspiring, hands-on environmental education experiences, to foster an appreciation of nature, and to promote sustainable practices.

The Nature Center is located at 99 Dromore Road, off Central Park Avenue, in Scarsdale, NY. Parking is free, and handicapped parking is available. The Nature Center’s grounds are open daily dawn to dusk throughout the year. The Center’s indoor exhibits are open daily (except CLOSED Fridays and a few holidays), 9:30AM – 4:30PM on weekdays and 10AM – 4:30PM on weekends.
